About Danny K
Expertise
I can answer questions you may have on quotations of people. You can either give me a quote, to see if I can identify the author, or give me a person, and I will look for quotes attributed to him or her.

Experience
I am a trivia nut, and a New York Yankee fan, so, from that, I have developed a liking of quotes, such as those of Yogi Berra, or even movie stars.

Quotations - Thomas Jefferson

Question
Can you find the quote by Jefferson in which he speaks to his opposition to the death penalty?

Answer
Don,

I couldnt find any such quote, but I DID find a site where somebody else asked about the subject. I offer this to you, so you can read it yourself:

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7842/archives/deathpen.htm

Now, another site discusses how he opted for reform of Virginia's death penalty laws:

"The first reforms of the death penalty occurred between 1776-1800. Thomas Jefferson and four others, authorized to undertake a complete revision of Virginia's laws, proposed a law that recommended the death penalty for only treason and murder. After a stormy debate the legislature defeated the bill by one vote. The writing of European theorists such as Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Bentham had a great effect on American intellectuals, as did English Quaker prison reformers John Bellers and John Howard.[11]"

This came from a PBS site, so it has more credibility then the other, to me, because there isnt an author listed, or references, to make the first site anything more then some person's opinion. Here is the PBS site, but I gave you all I saw listed for Jefferson on there, so it is mor for reference if you need it:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/execution/readings/history.html

Hope this helps you.

Danny
