About Dan Expertise Sometimes to help people you have to think like them. I am kind of one of the experts who thinks before answering. Don`t be afraid to ask questions.
Question Well, you are my last hope. If you ever saw 'Clerks,' my maddening question is rather like the guy who asks the video clerk: "Do you have that movie about that guy, who did that thing..."
But I might get lucky, and this is driving me batty.
I remember reading some fiction, I believe contemporary, but maybe late 1800s, I suppose, where the lead character (it's told in first person, I think) is a young-ish man (mid-20's?) and kind of an arrogant ass.
Near the beginning of the book, he meets a girl who blows him away, and in an inner monologue, he says: "Ask not what I DO, ask what I CAN do!" and then he proceeds to enumerate his qualities, one of which I vaguely recall was to do with hitting a nice backhand, in tennis. But there is a little list of other attributes.
I am desperate to find out what book it is from. I know that this is not much. I got close when a bookstore owner said it sounded like "Goodbye, Columbus" by Roth, but I never found that particular quotation.
Can you help me??
Sincerely,
John Morgan
Answer Good question. Google.com has a special tool in their system that you can click on that will allow you to search millions of books. You should try that site. Good luck and Happy New Year. If you need more help, ask a follow up and I will see what I can do. I have a friend in the book business too, yet he is on vacation this week.
