Quotations - quote following WWII, development of hydrogen bomb

Expert: Dan - 3/21/2005

Question
a friend and me were arguing about the wording of a quote.

I said "better red than dead",which as I recall was the reply of one U.S. Senator, at the time of the development of the hydrogen bomb.

My friend said the quote was "better dead than red".

Can you please clarify, whether my recollection of "better red than dead" is accurate, and provide the name of the source, and date in history ??

thanks alot !

James

Answer
Please try this site.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Better_dead_than_Red

However people do quote it the other way for other reasons. For an example This is from SA and the headline goes good with the story.
