Question
I would like to know the history of the phrase "Have your cake and eat it too" It dosen't make any sence, but everyone knows what it is suppose to mean    Thank you

Answer
Hi Joyce

This saying is a metaphore for having things both ways since the 16th century, eg, to spend your money and at the same time keep it. It first appeared in John Heywood's 'Proverbs' (1546). How much earlier than that it was used was anyone's guess.

Hope this helps-Angelina
