Question
Could you please tell me if you know who is credited with the sayings "let sleeping dogs lie" & "strike while the iron is hot"
I think the same person wrote them, but not sure.
Thank-you

Answer
hi hali
sorry to take so long to get back to you but i haven't been able to access this site. every time i tried to post an answer i kept getting a screen saying my database was full!
anyway the phrase 'strike while the iron is hot' comes from a quotation by john dryden from aeneis 'we must beat the iron while it is hot,but we may polish it at leisure'.

'you would be better served if you let sleeping dogs lie' is attributed to geoffrey chaucer-troillus and criseyde-'it is not good a sleeping hound to wake'.

hope this answers your question and once again i'm sorry for the delay
