About Nicholas Pemberton
Expertise
I have been an R.E.M. fan for at least 7 years now. I have all their LPs, over 30 singles, 7 videos, and 5 books, so I am sure that I can answer any question related to the music of REM itself. I also am sort of familiar with REM band bios, so I most likely can answer any question about a band member.

Experience
I am very familiar with the work of R.E.M. I have read several books and articles about them. I also frequent the different music news sites to get up to date information on what they are working on. I have been an expert on expertcentral.com, and have successfully answered every question asked of me.

Organizations
I am a member of the R.E.M. fanclub. I am also on a really good R.E.M. list group. I was also an expert on expertcentral.com.

Publications
No where.

Education/Credentials
Some college.

Awards and Honors
American Legion Award in eighth grade, but that has nothing to do with R.E.M.

Subject: "Gardening at Night" live

Question
Hey-While working out at the gym of all places, I recently heard "Gardening at Night" live.  As I've known that song since I was 13 (I'm 26 now,) I knew for certain that it wasn't from any album I'd known.  I've found that REM recently did a session on "Unplugged."  Since I live in Japan now, however, I'm unable to keep up with whatever worthwhile things might be on MTV.  So, to conclude, did the boys perform "Gardening..." on their Unplugged session, or could what I heard at the gym come from elsewhere?  I'm reasonably sure that they're using cable or DSS radio, so I doubt it would've been from a bootleg concert.  Also, I'm quite sure that it was a recent show as Michael's voice had that much more mellow and developed quality he's gained through the years.

Thanks for your help,
Thomas

Answer
As much as I would have liked to have heard R.E.M. perform "Gardening At Night" during their most recent stint on Unplugged, they did not.  The version you heard is most likely from the version of Dead Letter Office with two bonus tracks, which are "All The Right Friends" and an acoustic version of "Gardening At Night".  "All The Right Friends" was recently rerecorded by the band for the "Vanilla Sky" soundtrack.  Since you are Japan, I am not sure how you could get a copy of this version of Dead Letter Office, but I am sure if you look hard enough online, I am sure you will find it.  I hope this helped.

Nicholas
