Question
hi matt i just got this car all is good but now when i apply the breaks it stalls out i have tried the idle and air fuel mixture screw and still when i hit the breaks it cuts out you may have some suggestions for me thanks ryan

Answer
Hi Ryan,

Usually that means one of two things, the idle screw is not set high enough (but you said you adjusted it) or you have a clutch problem.

First, let's make sure the idle is set properly.  When you take off the air cleaner and look in the carb inlet, you should see about a 1-2mm gap that air can get through when the brakes are on.  If not, turn the idle screw in until you get that gap (don't get in the habit of adjusting idle with the radio trim either, that could cause the problem you are describing now).

As far as the clutch problem goes, it could be that the clutch shoes are getting hung up inside the clutch bell.  Most of the time this is caused by a clutch spring that is misaligned or incorrectly installed or broken.  This causes the clutch to stay engaged which stalls the engine just like in a real car if you try to stop without pushing the clutch pedal in.  To find out if this is the problem, you'll need to disassemble the clutch parts.  On some vehicles, it's a big job and on others it's relatively easy.  Try to follow your manual to see what needs to be done.

Good Luck.
Matt
