RC Model Airplanes/Cars/Boats - DC motors for model submarine

Expert: Martin Seymour - 5/13/2008

Question
Our science center is trying to develop an exhibit featuring a remotely operated sub.  I have created a sub that can submerge, surface and move forward and backward.  The trouble I am having is with the propulsion.  I am using the Tamiya 70153 submarine motor but, they are not standing up.  I am running them at 3 volts dc (even though they are rated at 1.5).  I am looking for options for the motors.  Any suggestions for a submersible dc motor?

Answer
HI Bruce.
You do not say how large the sub is, is the motor  being asked to do tooo much work --over loading it?

3v instead of 1.5 it must be screaming its guts out !
Sub motor?  not heard of these ? is it enclosed in hull ?
From what limited information you have given me i would say you are over cooking it.

Martin.
