About Ken Myers
Expertise
I can answer beginning, advanced and expert questions about electrically powered R/C model aircraft, and many questions about R/C model aircraft of all types, except helicopters. I`ve been building, flying and designing R/C model aircraft for 40 years.

Experience
I have been building and flying radio controlled model aircraft since 1960. I'm the president of the Electric Flyers Only, Inc., located in southeasten Michigan. I'm a past president of the National Electric Aircraft Council. I'm vice-president of the Midwest R/C Society. I was president and main founder of the UFO (Union Lake Flying Organization). I've built and flown most types of model aircraft except helicopters.

Question
Hello Ken,
I am building a BH Mosquito EP that will have 7 servos. This is the first plane I will fly with that many servos. All my other planes are electric, many of them twins, with 4 or 5 servos, but I have always used ecs with BEC. Could I go ahead without a receiver battery or a UBEC if I am conservative with my flying time and keep the lipo reasonably charged? Will a 2s lipo receiver battery do the job of feeding power to the servos?? How about a UBEC? the UBEC seems to be a little more complicated to install..
Thanks,
Philippe

Answer
Hi Philippe,

You definitely need either a receiver battery or a switching type battery eliminator circuit.  UBEC is a specific brand, but it has taken on a generic meaning for all switching type BECs.  They are not hard to install and seem to work quite well.  You could use a 2S Li-Poly for a receiver battery with a voltage drop circuit, but that is basically the same as using a stand alone switching BEC.  A 2-cell lithium iron phosphate pack makes a good 6v receiver battery without requiring any extra circuitry.  In a plane this size, the weight of a 720mAh NiMH receiver pack would hardly be noticed.

Good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
Ken
