Question
QUESTION: Hi martin, im making quite a large rc car ressembling a Range Rover, so quite big!, im toying with having a 4 Wheel Drive System onboard but i dont know how hard this would be, do you know any good sites where i can find Prop Shafts, Differentials, Brakes, Tyres, etc, and and advice would be good, Thanks a lot

Rob

ANSWER: HI ROBERT.
AN INTERESTING PROJECT BUT NOT EASY .
MY SECRET----AS I HAVE ALSO BEEN THINKING ALONG THESE LINES .
MY OWN PROJECT WOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT A METER LONG AND 600MM WIDE USING PARTS FROM AN INVALID SCOOTER THE BACK AXLE OF THIS HAS A GOOD STRONG DIFF AND HAS A ELECTRIC MOTOR ATTACHED
THIS TAKES  A LOT OF THE HARD WORK OUT OF IT.
THE ELECTRICS CAN ALSO BE USED --SPEED CON ETC
TH 4X4 WOULD BE MORE DIFFICULT AT THE FRONT
BUT THIS COULD BE ADDED LATER.
HAVE FUN.
KEEP IN TOUCH .

QUESTION: I was thinking if i scrap the prop idea and go with chain transmission then i can weld a sprocket onto a shaft for the rear tyres and maybe later incorporate a longer chain to operate a 4WD function, my question is though, do you reckon i will need a diff with chain drive or do you reckon i will get away with it?
my main worry though is the steering, first of all how to make the steering rod and secondly i need a mighty servo/motor to power the steering, any ideas?
For the breaking just use either disc brakes or V brakes with a strong 9Kg Servo motor and for the throttle just a standard servo

E-mail back on thoughts if you could

Thanks, Rob

Answer
Hi Rob
Sorry must have diff on back and front best to use shafts all the time. If you do without diff then you can only drive one wheel at the back on one side only this will make poor performance why don’t you like the scooter idea it comes with shaft diff and powerful motor you could do with out the motor and substitute a petrol engine but it would have to have a clutch for get always.

As to steering just copy same principal as other model cars. Using steel rod and tube and weld it up together, but a scooter would have most of the parts ready there for you !!!!
Servo does not connect direct to steering a electric motor goes between servo steering, and may be a threaded bar to push and pull the steering left and right. Servo only switches the motor on and off via micro switches and does not touch steering.
There I have about built it for you.
Martin
