REO Speedwagon - The Session with REO Speedwagon

Expert: Kathy - 9/20/2009

Question
Hi. I am the person who created, produced, and directed "The Session." I later went on to create and direct "Austin City Limits." I am now retired and living in Denver. I was elated and amazed to see REO Speedwagon on "The Session" pop up on the internet recently. I did the show 38 years ago. I thought it no longer existed in any form. I did 70 "The Session" shows at SIU and two of my proudest are REO Speedwagon and Billy Joel. I wonder if "The Session with Billy Joel will ever pop up? What great things REO Speedwagon went on to do. I'm glad to have been a small part of their success.

Answer
Hi Bruce,

I can't tell you how grateful fans are that you created, produced and directed "The Session" with REO Speedwagon! It's got to be the finest quality video of the band in existence in their early years.  Fans rave at the close-up shots of Gary Richrath on guitar, as well as the overall quality -- which has absolutely stood the test of time.  Your video certainly made the rounds and was no doubt instrumental in publicizing the band's cutting edge and creativity during that time. Without a doubt it helped launch REO Speedwagon's regional popularity which catapulted them into international fame.

Your work with Austin City Limits has also been inspiring, showcasing live performances on PBS by stellar musicians since the 70's. I can't help but wonder what would have happened to many of the artists you featured if your show hadn't helped them gain a national platform: Nora Jones, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Waylon Jennings, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and John Fogerty, just to name a few.

You have every right to be proud of "The Session" with REO Speedwagon, and we celebrate your work to this day! Thanks for providing so many die-hard fans with a glimpse into the very early days of REO Speedwagon. In the immortal words of Wayne and Garth, "We're not worthy!" :-)
