RV Repair - slide adjustment on travel trailers

Expert: Eric Beck - 9/7/2009

Question
I've got a 29ft.fifth wheel with a 14ft. slide. When I open it,one side seems to start first and then the whole thing slides out.One side will reach the wall first, stop and the other end will swing into place and stop. It's about 3-4in. that it travels before coming to rest against the gasket. When closing, the side that was last, starts to move first,3-4in. before the other side starts coming in.It seems to close alright, just one side lags behind, until fully closed. On the opposite side of the trailer, there are two threaded rods, that stick 8-10in.out from the frame of the trailer.I like to know how to adjust the slide.  Thanks Jim

Answer
as far i know what you are talking about is not that uncommon. When you have a slide as big as yours is (over Half the camper) Somtimes they do slide at different times. This is for the idea that the rubber seal that goes all the way around the slide is not being forced to flip over and lay in the other direction all at the same time as that much drag would really put a strain on the motor, but if it starts one side first and then the other the seal is being moved a piece at a a time, and not as hard on the motor. I would leave it be the way it is for now. Unless it is not seating right or closing all the way. But if you see no other problems I would let it just do its thing because its not hurting anything. I hope this helps!
