AboutDave Lawrence Expertise I can answer questions about breeding and showing rabbits. I have been breeding Black Rex rabbits for the past 10 years and have won numerous prizes for showing them.
Ive also done a fair amount of judging.
Question I have 2 bunnies one male and one female both neutered and happily live in a large double hutch outside. They have regular exercise and plenty of hay and fresh veg. I feed them on russel rabbit food mixed up with excel rabbit lite. They have two carrots a day, green beans and broccoli often, and occasional cabbage and kale. They also eat grass from the garden every day when i let them out. The last few months my rabbit (Blue Rex) William has been having health problems. He has never been poorly before. He has always been a rather over weight bunny and weighed around 3.05kg - 3.10 kg for many years. He lost weight suddenly when we moved house in august (to a more rural location and get a lot of wildlife in garden such as deer) and went down in weight to 2.65kg. he looked terrible and his spine was sticking out and he was clearly unhappy. The vet prescribed worming paste which we have given him and he has fully recovered and weighs 2.70 kg now. Yesterday i noticed a milky white discharge coming from his left eye which looks like 'milk'. There was quite a lot. I wiped it with a tissue and checked him regularly. Today the milk was coming out of both eyes and he sounds 'husky' like he is a bit snuffly, like having a runny nose kind of sound. I have taken him to vet and he says its a bacteria of tearduct and has prescribed me eye drops Fucithalmic vet. The vet wants to anesthetize William next week to check his teeth and also to flush out tear ducts. He has tried twice to see his teeth with the instrument but William doesn't like it. My previous vet has always said that William has got good teeth. I'm not sure what action to do next...help..
Answer hi clare to me the milky eyes sound like conjunctivitous which can be cured by buying some cream from achemist
if youtrust the vet let him do as he wants but if you think he is trying to rip youoff dont have the teeth checked out
if the rabbit is eating and drinking ok why bother.
