Rabbits - why does she have so much soft fecal stool & what is the average life span of a mini lop

Expert: Dave Lawrence - 10/28/2009

Question
I have a female mini lop.  She is almost 6 years old and weighs close to 6 lbs.  She gets at least 3 hours of exercise daily -- running around the family room and deposits her feces in a liter pan.  She is only given Timothy hay and Timothy hay pellet food and drinks plenty of water.  She is overweight because we used to feed her tooooooo many treats.  She is a "pig".  It has been 4 months since she began her new diet.  And she has an excessive amount of soft stool.  She always had that problem.  Although since her new diet, it's better.  But at least once or twice a week, she needs to get a lower bath to wash it off of her.  She is really good about it and tolerates the bathing.  My question is why does she have that soft stool (I can't remember what it is called) and what is the approximate life span.  She is strictly indoors and we do not show her.  She is extremely social and interacts well with our cat and dog.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

Connie

Answer
hi Connie usually the reason for soft stools is greens but as she is getting none feeding pellets is ideal.
perhaps its an hereditary thing which is in her genes .
6 is a good age for a mini lop but being well looked after will mean she can go on for another 2 or 3 years,
i had a friend who found a baby wild rabbit and it died at 11 years old.
Dave.
