AboutJulia Expertise The photo is of my daughter with her Best of Breed winner at our State Fair last year. Your questions are being answered by an adult! LOL I can help with questions on breeding and showing rabbits. I DO NOT condone breeding for the sake of breeding. We only breed for specific shows and to improve the breed. I am not a vet, but may be able to help a new person who is getting started and needs some advice. I will refer you to a vet for anything I am not sure of. We raise and show Mini-lop Rabbits. We have raised Grand Champion Rabbits, and we have dealt with problems arising from breeding and having rabbits in general. Whether you want to show, or just have a rabbit as a pet, make sure you have the time to spend with them, the money needed to care for them, and adequate housing for them.
Experience My family and I raise and show Mini-Lop rabbits. We have raised several Grand Champions, and have won numerous Best of Breed and other awards. We have had many carefully planned litters over the years, and also dealt with problems that arise from having rabbits in general.
Organizations We are members of the ARBA, and an ARBA registered rabbitry. Also are members of the Mini-lop Rabbit Club of America, and several local clubs.
Education/Credentials I have no "formal" training, but just rely on the experience I have gained as a successful breeder and shower.
Awards and Honors Our daughter won Best of Breed at the State Fair, and has numerous other Best of Breed wins. Our rabbits are all loved, healthy, and sweet.
Past/Present Clients Many people have bought our non-showable rabbits as pets, and have spread the word about our bunnies. They all know they can call or e-mail me with their questions.
Question My son recently rescued two rabbits (a male and a female)that had been dumped in a nature preserve. I have been told they are Himalayan. We have never had rabbits before but I new they would not survive in the wild so we brought them home. Needless to say, a month later we have four babies. The mom had them outside. We moved them to a nice nesting box with mom's fur and warm bedding, which the mom has accepted. So far, it has been 3 days and they are doing fine. My son found one of the bunnies in the corner by itself. Would that be any indication that the mom may be neglecting that one? Also, the mom and babies are all in a large hutch. Should we continue to let mom out for exercise daily or should she stay with her babies?
Answer Newborn bunnies have a habit of crawling around. Just place any strays back with the others. It is fine for Mom to get out some if that is what she is used to. And don't worry if you don't see her nursing them; very rarely will you catch her doing it. As long as they have little round bellies, then they are getting fed. Eyes should be open at about 10 to 14 days. Then they get really cute!!!
