Question Does the whole house need to have radiant flooring, or is it possible to do a complete lower level and then a hallway extending throughout the living area on the main floor? We would like real wood floors/carpet in some of the living areas.
Answer You may radiate one room with one radiator or radiant floor and heat the rest or your home with a warm air furnace if you like.
The key here is zoning. I design many systems with a radiant zone for the basement floor alone. Sometimes this is done with tubing only at first, making the basement "Radiant Floor Ready"®. Each area which differs in it's heat source is normally controlled independently by air or floor sensors or thermostats. This can get complicated and takes some experience to master. Zones between floor levels must be controlled and isolated by doors e.g. no open stair wells or lofts. I will refer you to previous posts on floor coverings and zoning.
You will need an intelligent design before proceeding.
