Radio - Music Director
Expert: April - 11/3/2009
Question Hi April,
Could you please outline the duties of a music director and what knowledge is needed to become one. How does one get in as a MD?
Thanks.
Answer Are you talking about a program director? most MD are a thing of the past due to corporations and budget cut backs. Either a board of people does this for them in a higher office or they just use billboards or these days people where many hats in this business so it would be the program director. It also depends on format?
Most PD's monitor what is going on air. They program the music and must have leadership abilities to schedule and check their on air staff's work and improvement. They work close with promotion to ensure the proper promotions are getting the proper exposure. They also work closely with the production director if there is one chance are the PD is in charge of anything that goes on air including production. They also are highly social, thus giving them networking opportunities to meet other PD's in other markets and they all get together and chat and talk among themself to find out who's song they will add next. so basically it's up to the program direct in most markets to pick what new song will be played or not!
