Radiohead - OK computer album cover

Expert: Andreas Moss - 6/1/2009

Question
what is the OK computer album cover trying to communicate?
what is your insight?

Answer
The cover was made by Stanley Donwood, who does pretty much all of Radioheads coverart. Sometimes Thom Yorke helps him.

Thom Yorke said this about the coverart:

"Someone's being sold something they don't really want, and someone's being friendly because they're trying to sell something. That's what it means to me. It's quite sad, and quite funny as well. All the artwork and so on...we chose to pursue it after we [finished the album]. ... It was all the things that I hadn't said in the songs."

Don't know if that says you a lot.

1997 was a pretty weird and changing time. It was about then internet started taking off and computers got really big. You know, mp3s, Napster, porn, overload of information and everything. There was a lot of paranoia and tension involved with that. Some people put OK Computer kind of as a reaction to that. The artwork especially.

I think its also about modern life stress, anxiety and stuff like that. It has a lot of safety-symbols from security-exits, warning labels and stuff like that. Thom Yorke has always been a paranoid man. It could mean a lot. There's no official explanation though, so you might as well have your own take on it. Tell me if you like. :)

Nice weekend, and thanks for the question.
