Question Can you explain in dummy talk what all this means? lumbar spine demonstrates bony and disc degenerative change at L5-S1. at L5-S1 there is a mild L5 over S1 retrolisthesis. left paracentral subforaminal broad based disc protrusion and facet jiont hypertrophy and ligamentum hyertrophy is noted with severe left neural foraminal stenosis at left L5 and probably S1 root impingement or compression. Moderate right neural foraminal stenosis is also noted. No spinal stenosis is present. decreased T2 signal of L4-L5 and L5-S1 intervertebral discs is noted consistent with degenerative change. endplate modic type II degenerative is also noted at L5-S1 level
Answer L5-S1 disc is showing signs of age (you do not need to be very old for this to occur) and you also have a slipped disc at this level and an enlarged joint that is between the vertebrae as well as an enlarged ligament (which goes down the back of the vertebrae from one to another - provides support)and also a narrowing on the left side of L5 where the nerve exits the spine to travel to the body parts it controls which is probably compressing the nerve root (may cause pain). The right also has this problem but not as severe.
