Radiology/Does Surgerical Material Show Up

Question
After an upper endoscopy procedure where a surgery is done on a hiatal hernia. Does the mesh or staples or material used  for the surgery show up on an ultrasound, ct scan, or x-ray? Thanks.

Answer
Hello Camille,

It all depends on what the material is.  If it a metal like a staple then it would be seen on xray and CT and may be seen on US if carefully looking for it.  If it is plastic like mesh then it will be seen on US but US is not usually done in this area.  Plastic will be seen on CT but may not be seen on xray.

Hope this helps.
