Question
I have been seeing a bnsf coal train with two engines and one engine at the rear.

Answer
The engine in rear of train is also called Banker and it is mostly used in heavy gradient sections to ensure that vehicles don't roll back due to gravity. The engine in rear gives pushing effect to the train to overcome gravitational forces due to heavy gradients.
