Topic: Rails/Railroad

Expert: Norman T. Eisengart

Subject: Diesel loco fuel consumption

Question
I am a fiction writer.
The diesel train in my story has a 7500kg fuel capacity (16530 pds) (8.265 tons)

Fuel consumption is listed below.  I have no idea what it means.  Seems like a challenge for a railroad engineer.  Are you up to the challenge?

Specific fuel consumption, g/ehp*h......154+7.7

The above spec is for a Russian dual-cab diesel freight loco.  I do not know how to use it to determine how much fuel is left at any time during a trip on the Transiberian railline.  The +7.7 on the spec sheet appears above the number 154 in the same manner a 2 appears above a number as in that number squared.

Several other engineers, not railroad men, were unable to figure this out.

Please do not be too technical or I will not understand your answer.

Answer
Hey Bob...

Sorry I was unable to respond to your question sooner.  I was on vacation, and just got in town.  I will pass this question to a friend at the diesel shop to see if he can figure this one out.  Give me a couple more days and I will have something for you.

Thanks,
Norm
