Rape Counseling - molested by older brother

Expert: Carol Smith - 5/8/2008

Question
hey there,
I was molested by my older brother when i was younger from the ages 4 to about 10.  I am always dealing with this and it seems to have become less painful, but i  am finding myself turned on by things that i don't really want to be turned on by, i.e. rape scenes in movies, the idea of rape.  FOR example, i am reading a novel right now about 4 women who are friends and one of them tells her story of growing up and how she was molested and then later raped by her uncle.  parts of this story are descriptive and i stopped reading it because of how aroused it was making me.  HELP!
i don't want my turn ons to be rape and the idea of someone being molested.  what can i do?  what should i do? should i tell my boyfriend about this?

Answer
I believe that your body is just responding to the ideas of sex not the rape or molestation.  Sexual arousal is normal part of being who you are.  If you feel that talking to someone about it then find a counselor or you could do a couple therapy so that your boyfriend will understand.  Know that your feelings are normal and that you are not strange.
