Rape Counseling - Still suffering from childhood incest

Expert: Kelli - 6/16/2009

Question
I have still struggling very much so with issues regarding my childhood (being raped nightly by my father). Is there a specific type of treatment that will help or is advised? Or is individual therapy going to be enough?

Answer
I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you, Laura.

I hear in your question a sense of being overwhelmed.  Like maybe you are afraid that there's so many different issues to deal with, how could individual therapy possibly handle it all?  Or that maybe that there's so much to discuss, where do you even know where and how to start?  That's completely understandable.

There isn't a specific type of treatment that is advised for incest.  The effects of sexual abuse is highly individualized.  Therefore, therapy must be as well.  A psychologist or counselor that has a lot of experience with survivors of sexual abuse can help you with a complete, well-rounded treatment plan that can include other types of therapies like support groups, alternative therapies, medications, etc.  It is important to have one specific therapist that can help you find what is best for you and help you as you work through things that may come up in other settings.

I hope this helps.
Good luck to you.  May you find peace and healing.
