Education/Credentials I graduated from college to receive my Nursing Degree.
I am currently enrolled in a RN-BSN degree
which will continue into a Master's Degree program.
I have a technical school certificate as a Psychiatric Assistant.
Question I am 37, single, mom of an 11 year old. Two weeks ago a "guest" of my roommates brought us all drinks and tunes, then raped me in my bedroom after I went to sleep.
I moved out and felt accomplished and healthy at first, but now I'm living with Mom and feel depressed, lazy and unmotivated.
I'm pretty sure I need counselling, but don't quite know where to start. The local rape couselling center has a long waiting list (please email me for zip code). I need to improve and move on ASAP, as I am starting school soon, seeking employment, and doing my best to be a strong figure for my daughter. Suggestions?
Answer I am proud of you for taking steps to protect you and your daughter. I am inspired by your take charge approach and willingness to change your life for your daughter. I applaud you.
It's a shame that when you are willing and ready, the support system that should be available to you is not. I hope that you placed your name on the long waiting list-- sometimes, things move faster than anticipated and sometimes a local chapter can see a list of 50 names and knows it has to act and recruit more therapists and counselors.
There should also be a rape counseling telephone hotline in your area. You can call that number, and simply tell them about the long waiting list and that you need help, NOW. Today.
They should have quite a few other numbers to give you for other counseling services. Most trained therapists have dealt with sexual abuse/trauma and could help you.
You mentioned starting back to school. Well, if all else doesn't work, or if you need more help,-- your school should have counselors on staff that can help you through this transition. They can help you as you navigate through financial aid, locating a job, class schedules, book requirements, being a single parent, etc. And they also can help refer you to a therapist that can help you heal from the rape. School is a great resource. Please don't feel embarrassed to ask. Most colleges these days are filled with adult women and men going back to school to improve their lives and the lives of their children. You are not alone.
Good luck to you. I hope this helps. Just keep trying and pushing. A door will open for you to get the help you need. I believe that.
