Question
Hi Lisa,
My name is Jessica and I am 25 years old.  I have been suffering with calf pain for almost 7 years when my daughter was born.  2 years ago it got so debilitating that I was taken to the ER and was that it was not a DVT. I was symptomatic of DVT but they ruled that out.  After 3 Dopplar Ultrasounds. MRI and lots of blood work later, the docs have told me that there are clots in my superficial system.  Evidentially there is a web of varicose veins inside my calf muscle and that is where the clots are.  My calf is 2x bigger than my other and they told me that could just be my muscle development.  My foot swells up to the point where it feels like it is going to pop. My veins get all distended and some days it takes me an hour or so just to be able to walk it almost feels like the worst charlie horse you have ever had times 100!  I take Motrin 800 up to 3 times daily with acid reducers. I wear a support stocking and I am in pain all the time.  I feel as if there may be something there can be done I just cant find the answers.  If there are any test or questions I can ask my doc about or any other info you could give me that would be wonderful. Thank you very much,
Jessica

Answer
Hi Jessica, has your doctor referred you to anyone else or just tried to treat things himself?  You should be seen by a vascular surgeon to evaluate the vein issues, there is alot they can do with laser these days.  I'm not even familiar with the newest treatments because they keep coming out with newer techniques so quickly.  I would also ask about a referal to a lymphedema therapist.  You may or may not have lymphedema along with the vein issues.  The therapist can evaluate you and if you can have the bodywork they do called manual lymph drainage or lymph drainage therapy, it will help promote the flow of the lymph that is pooling and help your foot from swelling.  The therapist can teach you how to do the bodywork too.
