Question For approximately 2-4 years I have noticed a strong odor coming from my body. It is getting to the point that I want to quit my job. When I am at work and during times of extreme stress, it is so strong that if I walk into a room it takes over. I recetly noticed that when I urinate, the smell lingers. It seems as though it is coming from my genital region. I have seen both my OB and family doc who can't find anything. I had a bacterial vaginosis a while back was fiven flagyl which cleared it up ( I went back for a check up) but the odor got stronger after taking the meds. I have tried chlorophyll, activated charcoal, vitamin B, acidophillus, different soaps and all. Nothing is taking the odor away. It seems as though it changes from an elderly persons smell to a rank funky odor. I had a CT scan done a pelvic exam and a sonogram. All were ok. My family doc sniffed me when I went in to see him, and he did not smell anything. It seems to be really bad when I am at work. When I urinate and wipe, there is no strange odor. People at my job are complaining and I am trying but I don't know what to do. I have basically alienated myself from everyone because of this.
A couple of years ago about the time this odor started I went on a low carb diet and continue on it from time to time. I am trying to give you some background info in hopes that you can help me. I also noticed that around the time of my cycle, the smell really gets bad. I want my life back.. please I pray you can help me or can give me some advice. I have also noticed that some of the supplements have helped the odor that lingers after I urinate, but the funky odor is still there. I have also had blood teast and everything.
Answer Hi Rashaan,
First off, you mention cat scans, exams, and sonograms, but not blood work, has any been done and what did they look for? Were some of the blood tests hormone tests?
Usually when you take any antibiotic and flagyl is one of them, it will upset the flora of the vagina, and polyamides can result.
The problem is when you notice an odor you are inclined to wash or use products to help the odor, washing changes the PH balance and can cause odors and infections. There is good bacteria and bad in the vagina. You need a balance.
Most likely the Flagyl upset the balance. Did they tell you to take probiotics or take yogurt with the Flagyl?
In some cases just eating 6 or so servings of fruits and vegetables can help, probiotics, not washing as much, wearing cotton underwear, not wearing any tight pants or clothing that constricts, and some women detect odors that are the natural smell of your body that others do not detect.
Around the time of your cycle, you do produce more bacteria and blood of course, both emit odors. Do not douche, it's not healthy.
I would suggest that your doctor do a culture to be sure there is not some remnant of any infections whether fungal or bacterial present, check your blood to be sure you are not diabetic or anything is happening that needs attention, then if they say nothing shows, try the probiotics, and the suggestions above.
