Subject: prader-willi syndrome and nose bleeds

Question
My 7 year old nephew has prader-willi syndrome. His nose started bleeding last night. Today, the school asked that he be checked out of school because his nose would not stop bleeding. Is this recent and continuous nose bleed a symptom of his prader-willi syndrome or is it absolutely something else? Thank you.

Answer
Greetings Ava

To my knowledge, it's not a symptom of the prader-willi syndrome.  Does he have any allergies?  Is the school heat on and the air dry?  A humidifier might help keep the mucus membranes moist if they are dry and irritated.  If he has allergies, nosebleeds are very common with them. I have extremely bad spring and fall allergies to trees/leaves and when I was little I had to have a cauterization done on a blood vessel in my nose that broke and kept bleeding.  If the bleeding is daily, he needs to see an ear/nose/throat specialist to find out why, and if it is just sporatic I would keep a diary of what he eats, is exposed to, and what he is doing when the bleeds start.
