Rave/House/Techno Music - Beganing a band

Expert: Robert Vincent - 6/22/2003

Question
Me and my friends are beganing a band and we want it to sound like a semi-techco dance band,(like Ace of Base or Ava Adore Smashing Pumpkins)but I have no clue what i should use to produce the music and mix it and whatnot. can you PLEASE help me out if you can because i have hardly any knowledge of these things. Thanks.

Answer
Hi there,

Well probably the best advice I can give you is: start simple!

Don't spend thousands of euro's/ dollars on equiptment you're not going to use anyway. If you want your band to sound more rock then techno a simple drumcomputer like Roland 909 or drum computers from Yamaha should do the trick. If you want you the sound to be more techno then rock, you'll more then just a drumcomputer. Get your hands on a simple sampler and a sequencer.

You can also start out by doing stuff on your computer with programms like Fruityloops or Cubase. But they are useless once you get on stage.

What it comes down to is creating your own sound, problem is that computers don't create it for you they just do what you ask. So experiment a lot with it.

Check out bands like Placebo, Muse, Fischerspooner etc. they all use a simple drumcomputer in their set.

Keep me posted, really want to hear what you've created
