I know a lot about techno music itself, ask me if you would like suggestions for songs you should listen to. You can be extremely specific when you tell me what type of techno you want to hear, because I`ve heard a lot of it. For example, you can say `give me titles of some trance songs that are over 150 bpm` or `give me titles of some jungle songs that are heavy on the `bass` and not too heavy on the `drums`. If you are new to the techno genre, I can tell you about most of the different genres of electronic music. Meaning, I`ll explain what one is, and compare it to others. I don`t know much about Gabber or a ton about house, but I know the most about trance, dance (classic and new), jungle and happy hardcore. I have played classical piano and oboe since I was 5 and 11 (respectively) so if you are into classical but want to start listening to some techno, I can suggest some starter songs for you. I`m interested in helping more people learn about techno music because it is fairly unknown in some areas (like NH).

Experience
Well let's put it this way... we all know that everyone steals music so I won't claim not to fit this description. However, I am also willing to pay exorbitant amounts of money to see my favorite artists live in concert to support them, and buy their CDs when I've sampled tracks (I'm cautious like that). If I don't, then it's their fault for not playing within 200 miles of me! Believe me if I had enough time to travel to Europe I would.

Question
Hi, I'm starting to become familiar with trance, and I find that I like Progressive Trance in particular. I keep reading that Summerbreeze and Tranceport are fantastic albums. If I tell you what I like, could you tell me if you think i would like these and perhaps make a few more recomendations?
I like: Dj Tiesto (in particular, flesh, southern sun remix, and silence, but don't like lethal industry)
Oakenfold (southern sun, motion, ready steady go, but not This Is Trance)
Don't really like Chemical Brothers for the most part (too much repetition, not spacey enough), but love Star Guitar.
Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Answer
Hi...
That's funny, I don't like many Chemical Brothers songs nearly as much as I like Star Guitar either, hmm...
Anyhow, do you remember which tranceport album you were told was good? I am most familiar with (1) mixed by Paul Oakenfold and (3) mixed by Sandra Collins, which are both excellent. So yes, I think you'd like Paul Oakenfold's albums in general, and if you like Ready Steady Go you'd also probably like the Crystal Method (not trance) as the first time I ever heard Ready Steady go I thought it WAS the crystal method... and I was really surprised it was paul oakenfold. DJ Tiesto is also excellent live, I was lucky enough to see him over the summer actully... check out live any live at dance valley entitled set. Also get live @ MysteryLand '99, also Tiesto. You may like Cygnus X - Orange Theme (Tiesto remix)... also DJ Tiesto - Sparkles, Gouryella - Gouryella, Paul Oakenfold - Live @ Shadow Lounge (can't remember the date but these are exactly the types of songs you'd like), Tiesto - Suburban train and urban train, System F - Needlejuice...

You should also search for the following 'band' names since they are aliases for groups or pairs of people one of which is Tiesto, so if he's contributed to the tracks you may like their style too: (I find that some of the most annoying things ever is finding a song I like and then finding out it's one of my favorite DJs and I didn't even know it, that's so bothersome because if I just knew before then I could have searched for it)...

Alibi = DJ Tiesto & Armin Van Buuren (who also RULES!)
A3 = Tiesto (his real name is Tijs Verwest) & DJ Montana
Allure = Tijs Verwest
Gouryella = Ferry Corsten + Tiesto
Kamaya Painters = M. B. De Goeij + DJ Tiesto
Major League = Armin van Buuren + DJ Tiesto
Vimana = Ferry Corsten + DJ Tiesto ('We came' by them is GREAT)

And since you like Silence, I might as well suggest Johan gielen - Live @ club eau (I forget what date) because the Airscape/Svenson & gielen remix of Sarah McLachlan - Silence is also excellent, and personally I actually like it better than Tiesto's.

Anyhow, back to your original comment about Progressive trance, one of my favorite songs is Solar Stone - Speak in Sympathy. Have you heard any Digweed sets or the Progressive Euphoria CD set?

Good luck in your search for good songs...
Sincerely,
Kirby
