Question
Hey, ive been listening to elctronic music for 10+ years now and know quite a bit about the genre myself. However, i have a very select taste and have always had a hard time finding exactly what I was looking for. What that would be is EITHER house or techno, thats hard and DARK. Occasionally i like some of the happy, jump-up stuff but it needs to be hard. Also, im sure you know what I mean when i say dark; but to ellaborate it almost sounds evil. This usually goes for all the other stuff I listen to-most importantly, jungle and breaks. Do you have any suggestions of either particular Djs names or sets that you feel are must haves under any of these genres?(breaks and house being my favorites). Thanx for your help-Steve

Answer
Hi...
Try some of these, I'll list the genre I associate it with, and if I'm not sure it's just left blank :) techno-listeners sometimes differ in their classifications...

1. Dieselboy - Project Human (some seriously creepy dark tracks on this) <--Jungle
2. Frankie Bones - Live from San Fransisco (I think that's the album, but I'll check and get back to you if it's not) <--techno or NY house?
3. DJ Syn - Hardcore Gabber Set (I know nothing about this mp3 I randomly downloaded other than the fact that this is its name on the internet and it was more good quality than most of the gabber I've heard... I dunno if you can stand gabber but this is dark, creepy, hard and jump up all at the same time (unless you meant jump up as the jungle subgenre which as I think about it, is probably the case. Anyhow give this set a try if you can find it and you may not be disappointed...)) <--Gabber
4. Grrr it's hard for me to think of suggestions right now
5. This is because my friend is blasting Gigi D'Agostino Euro-dance from the other room and I can hear it through the walls!
6. Anyhow... also get 'Weird Energy', a seemingly not very publicized track produced by DJ Hype. <--DnB/Jungle
7. AK1200 - Lock and Roll (album, all of it's really dark and or spooky, lots of human touches like screaming or giggling vocals that are seriously demonic...) <--Jungle/DnB

Well I'll write back as soon as I can get some more ideas but I figure I'll give these for now...

Sincerely,
Kirby

I know a lot about techno music itself, ask me if you would like suggestions for songs you should listen to. You can be extremely specific when you tell me what type of techno you want to hear, because I`ve heard a lot of it. For example, you can say `give me titles of some trance songs that are over 150 bpm` or `give me titles of some jungle songs that are heavy on the `bass` and not too heavy on the `drums`. If you are new to the techno genre, I can tell you about most of the different genres of electronic music. Meaning, I`ll explain what one is, and compare it to others. I don`t know much about Gabber or a ton about house, but I know the most about trance, dance (classic and new), jungle and happy hardcore. I have played classical piano and oboe since I was 5 and 11 (respectively) so if you are into classical but want to start listening to some techno, I can suggest some starter songs for you. I`m interested in helping more people learn about techno music because it is fairly unknown in some areas (like NH).

Experience

Well let's put it this way... we all know that everyone steals music so I won't claim not to fit this description. However, I am also willing to pay exorbitant amounts of money to see my favorite artists live in concert to support them, and buy their CDs when I've sampled tracks (I'm cautious like that). If I don't, then it's their fault for not playing within 200 miles of me! Believe me if I had enough time to travel to Europe I would.
