Subject: homestead exemption

Question
Hi,
We have lived here in Florida for 4 years, having purchased a home in 2003.  Call us stupid, but we didn't know Florida offered homestead exemption until this past month when we recieved an application from the county assessor.  Can we file for the 3 years we didn't file but paid taxes....please advise. regards, Leslie

Answer
Hi Leslie,

Thank you for your question.

Sorry to hear that you did not realize Florida has a homestead exemption, as well as, the "Save Our Homes Amendment". It might not be a consolation, but there are other homeowners not aware of the homestead exemption.

Unfortunately, you can not get the homestead exemption retroactively for the past 3 years.

Sorry to be the bearer of less than happy news.

File for exemption as soon as possible so that you don't forget.  My wife has to remind me of things I forget all the time. (smiling)

Thank you,
Glenn Ginsburg
