Real Estate: Florida - Homestead vs. Renting

Expert: Scott Slocum, Licensed Broker Associate - 9/10/2008

Question
My ,mother in law is a Florida resident but is back in Mass. due to her husbands health...she may not be able to make it back down to Florida for the winter...but cannot afford to carry the cost...she is considering renting the property...could you please advise as to the laws regarding rental (i.e, lenght of time allowed) etc relative to losing her homestead exemption...thank you

Answer
Good Afternoon Marianne,

Your question is slightly beyond my scope of knowledge.  You really need to contact a real estate attorney to advise you on the legalities of renting a homestead property in relation to the taxing exemption extended to Florida residents.

Thanks in advance,

Scott Slocum
