Question
I live with my parents.  I have been for sometime and was never asked to pay rent.  After I left my job and haven't been able to find one in  3 months.  So, one week my dad says I have to pay 100 dollars a week, and if I do not pay then I have to leave which is understandable.  So, to enter into this verbal contract I would have to agree right?  Of course he can still enforce the conviction but is it legal for so short of time?  To just tell me I have to pay without actually getting into a verbal agreement?  Or even then, I know he has the "squatting" option, is it assumed that with no rental agreement or set amount prior to moving in, is that the rental agreement itself?  Plus, having never asked till now, which is respectfully trying to change the previously stated contract, if it is indeed considered one, without prior notice.  I read that for rental payment changes that the landlord has to give 30-45 day notice before the actual said date of the change.  Is one week legal?  I know it's wrong to be somewhere and not pay anything, I know that much, I should be paying even if I can't find a job and it's not my father's problem at all.  But the sudden change is kind of unsettling.  What makes it bad is that the previous week, he said it's okay as long as I keep my room clean also.  Because I am now going to college and everything.  Then this week all this happens.

Answer
Are you really asking a lawyer for help when you father wants you to grow up and move on with your life?  Really?  WOW!!!

This is something I will not do.  You are grown up, and your father is putting a reasonable expectation on you.  When I graduated high school, I paid rent or I had to leave.  That is life.

It is time for you to grow up.  Clearly your father knows this too and is doing his best to make sure that happens.

Life is hard, and the law and the government are not here to take care of your life challenges.  Stop wasting my time, there are people on here that have real problems.
