Real Estate Law (esp. Landlord-Tenant) - Landlord has stolen my property

Expert: Michelle Mangen - 4/30/2009

Question
Hi
I wonder if I have any options open to me.  I have just realized that some of my personal property has gone missing, and my landlord is the only other person with access to my apt.  I live alone, and am not sure the time that my belongings were removed, btu am 100% certain that they were stolen from my bedroom when I was not in my apartment.  While I am convinced the landlord is responsible, I have no evidence, other than the loss of my property.  What should I do?

Answer
John:

What a touchy situation and how frustrating. Have you contacted your landlord to ask? Do you have on-site managers that may have also had access to your apartment?

I would suggest you certainly talk to them first. However, as you say it's hard to prove so if they deny it, you will likely have no recourse.
