I have this question asked from me many times. You are allowed to install an alarm system for your apartment or condo or co-op as long as it is not bothering others or it's not faulty.
the security is only for you and your family, and no one can say you can't install it.
as long as they are the normal security systems, which are meant for your apartment or your living space only.

QUESTION: But, do I have to give the security code to the building manager or maintenance person so they can get into my apartment if they have to? Also, when a person owns their apartment as opposed to renting, would the building manager or maintenance person be allowed to come in as they please? I mean, would they have a key?
Answer no you don't have to give the security code to any one.
This is more of a legal issue, than real estate issue, and i don't know which type of rent/purchase contract you signed.
but usually alarm is for triggering the security company of burglars, and etc...
if they want to access your apartment for repairs, they should make an appointment with you.
if the property is on fire, god forbid, or if there is a real emergency, like a huge water leak, or such, then they would break in anyway, and the security company will be notified, and they will contact you.
In either case, they are able to get into your property, it's just that a security company will be alarmed, for the safety of you, and your belongings.
All you want to give them is your contact info, and if you want, one of the keys to your apartment.
The code is never required.
