Question I recently brought a property in brooklyn NY.
The property C/O is listed as a 1 family dwelling but the dept of finance for real estate purpose listed it as a 2 family.
I would like to know if there is a difference in the real estate tax that I would be paying between a 1 family/ 2 family. If it is worthwhile for me to go to the city dept of finance and try to fight it and get it corrected. My broker/lawyer/title search rep all told me that 1,2 and 3 family pay the same property tax %.
Thanks.
Answer Hi dear john:
the taxes in the city goes based on assessment value of the house by department of finance. In many many cases 2 family would get taxed more also, but it's not always a reason.
So each situation has it's own characteristics. In your case, you should 100% go and fix the wrong info in finance departments, and there are many reasons for it.
Also ask your neighbor with the same characteristic house, and see how much they pay, and if you are paying much more, then that means something wrong.
In order for you to fix the finance department you need to take all your documents so they would correct the issue, and i think it's worth the time spend because it wouldn't create problems in the feature.
