Question
Hi. I looking to obtain a house that is located on the Isle of Palms. The house needs to be moved. The owner is looking to donate it to a non-profit organization, then I will donate some money to the non-profit in return for a donation letter. I want to know if this legal before I go ahead with the moving expenses? I also need to know how to look up wether or not the deed to the property is free and clear of all liens and or mortgages? Thanks.

Answer
You should consult with a real estate attorney concerning the legalities and tax laws for moving a house.  I will be glad to recommend several if you like.  Obtaining information on liens can be found at www.charlestoncounty.org - online services.  You need to first look up the property record card which should give you the deed book page and number.  Then go to the deed/mortgages/liens/plats section and enter the book and page.  Or you can just go by the Charleston County Courthouse.

Good luck to you in your endeavor to secure and move the house.
