Question Hello, I purchased my home in April of 2006 and was then subsequently married in July 2006. I would like to add my wifes name to the ownership forms, is there any easy way to do this? Thanks,
Russell
Answer Russell,
You need to start with your mortgage company. Most mortgages have an acceleration clause in the documents you sign. Sometimes those clauses include a provision that if the home is sold (title changes), the loan is immediately due in full.
If you get the OK from the mortgage company, they might have a title company they want you to use to facilitate this. They might also let you use your own title company.
Keep in mind that Texas is a community property state. These laws might also assist you in what you are trying to do. If this is an option that might interest you, I would consult a lawyer.
It is my opinion that doing the title change you originally asked about would be the way to go.
