Repairing Copiers & Faxes - Sharp Al 1540cs

Expert: Don MacDonald - 11/3/2009

Question
Don, or anyone else out here, do you know what F5 error code is. It is another code that came up after trying to get the scanner to work by moving it as you, Don, suggested. It does move fairly well. there are no binds, even though it is a little snug when I move it, which I suppose it should be, but after moving it to the other end, it runs its course and returns to the left side where it should be, and then it repositions itself by moving just a bit, and then it gives the f5 code, if not the same old dreaded L1 code. The lamp seems to be ok. It does light up as it should, and then it turns off, as it also should, but either one, or both of  the codes come up again. Any ideas? Don, I was reading that the XD100 xerox is basically the same machine as this AL 1540cs and also other sharp models. What say you?  Thanks and Best regards to all.

Answer
Mario:
Yes the Sharp AL and Xerox XD are basically the same.
I have been unable to find any reference to 'F' codes in my XD100 manual.I do have a professional aquaintance that specializes in Sharp repair and I will contact him tomorrow to see if he can help.We'll see if we can get you more information toward repairing ,or at least diagnosing, your problem.The fact that your lamp assy. returned to the home position and tried to light up is encouraging.Talk to you soon.

Mario;
I talked to my friend who works on Sharps almost exclusively and he said that your F5 code is for a bad or loose exposure lamp.That could have happened when you were pulling it off the home postion.He said the lamp is very small and easily damaged.Unfortunately it is not replaceable separately and is part of an assy.He also said that the 1540 model is the "weakest" of the AL series, having more problems than the others.
All that being said,it looks like a replacement machine may be in your future rather than putting money into a "weak" machine.I wish I had better news. By the way, You can test the lamp by using 5-3 in diagnostics.
Good luck, Don
