Reptiles/Chinese water dragon and mbd
Can severe mbd be reversed in a months time?
About a month ago I was told by my vet that my 17month old cwd had severe mbd, I had just bought him 3 weeks prior.
I called the pet shop and they asked to have them back to been seen by their vets .. About a month has past in between and they have been on critical care supplements, liquid calcium and mega Ray lamps..
The latest report from their vets state no sigh of mbd at all..I was led to believe mbd takes months to recover from. Do you have an opinion please..
Severe MBD cannot be reversed in a month. Normally, a severe mbd would involve nutritional support +- analgesia (pain relief) +- fluidtherapy via the intraosseous or coelomic route and a calcium metabolism protocol involving oral (usually) calcium, vitamin d3 injections and calcitonin. Mercury vapour lamps can also be used. Severe cases need critical care and are hospitalised. All previous after xrays and bloods including haematology, biochemistry and electrolytes - without these it cannot be "graded".
If you are using mega rays watch out for temperatures rising as if severe then mobility will be comprimised, also have midiry levels decreasing assuming good ventilation. Secondary infections should be prevented also partly with close to perfect husbandry.
Hope this helps
