Question
Hello,

I am very ineterested in owning a Red Tail Boa. I have been reading numerous care sheet, articles, and information on these beutiful snakes. At my house i have 2 cats and 2 Bearded Dragons. I was wondering what proplems if any the cats would cause. Please write back and tell what you think.

                                                                                Thanks

Answer
Hi nathan,
Aside from the obvious, Cats kill snakes and big snakes kill cats, there is one problem. The problem comes from the fact that cat urine produces amonia in large quantities. It is generated immediately and will cause a fatal respiratory ailment with the Boa. I know this from first hand experience. I used to have 4 cats at one time and all my Boas were always ill. Finally over time the last of the cats died and all the snakes got better. I discussed this once with a Reptile vet in our herp group. He said that he has seen this over and over. Even with a very clean litter box and no odor that you can detect, it is still always in the snakes environment. My litter boxes where at the opposite end of a large house and cleaned every day. Just be aware of this fact and keep things separate. Otherwise I never have had or heard of any problems. Thanks Edmund Brown [ReptileEd]
