Reptiles - Redtail BOA

Expert: Cecelia Ericson - 1/9/2006

Question
I just purchased a redtail Boa from a chain pet store in our area. After bringing him home I noticed that his vent is open and appears swollen on the inside. Concerned that he may be having elimination difficulty I placed him in warm water and about ten minutes a small amount of white thick substance was eliminated(appeared to be urine similar to that of my python). The vent remained open. I checked on him the next and found some sort of dried particles stuck under his vent. I soaked him again thinking it may be the beginning of stool. The dried particles "rehydrated" and looked mucousy. It has now been 4 days since I brought him home and the vent remains open. I have tried to feed him twice and he appears disinterested. He was fed live in the pet store and I prefer to feed my snakes prekilled. He hasn't eaten since 29 Dec and everything I have read states that Boas are great eaters. Is my snake sick and not interested in eating or is it the stress of the new environment? He has an appointment at the vet in 4 days but I am afraid that he may not survive that long.

Answer
Anglea,

Sorry that I haven't reply back. I have been sick for 5 day now. I am not sure what to do for this kinda thing. The best things is to do is have the vet take a look at him and see what happening with him. It sounds very serious.. I wsh I knew more about. Please let me know what the vet said. If you need more help. I'll see if my reptile partner ( Jim Coles ). Might know something to do for that problem to help you out too. Let know ho he is doing. Thanks!
