Experience I've had around 50 reptile-years of experiance with a wide variety of snakes and lizards. I specialize in animal nutrition. I have spent more time with boids (boas and pythons) than coloubrids (kings, milks, and corns) and the majority of my lizard experiance is with tropicals. I have not worked with hot snakes so I would be unqualified to answer questions regarding them.
Question Today in my yard I saw a snake I have never seen before. It was 18-24 inches long, greenish gray and had three ridges running the length of the snake, one on top of its back and the other two down the sides below the midline. Seen in cross section the snake would have looked more triangular than round. The head was not typical of a venomous snake. We live on Lake Hartwell in Northeast Georgia. Any idea of what it may have been? Thanks for your help.
Answer More likely than not, if the ridges were a different color than the rest of its body, the snake was either an Eastern Ribbon Snake or an Eastern Garden snake. If they were the same color, I would guess that it was a Coachwhip. It's also possible that it's something not native to your area and that someone bought a pet and turned it lose or it got out.
