Question I found what I believe to be a "baby" snake in my office this morning. I am located in Coastal Alabama. She/he was about 6 inches long, reddish brown in color, with a dark brown/black head. The head is relatively small and does not appear to be "triangular". It does not appear to be poisonous; however, I am NOT an expert. She/he has some lighter marking starting to form on the base of his "neck". Can you help us identify this snake?
Answer Hey Terry,
sounds like one of two species a Northern "Red-Bellied Snake" genus=Storeria occipitomaculata occipitomaculata or a "Midland Brown Snake" genus=Storeria dekayi wrightorum. If you can take a dig pic or phone camera pic and you can email to xmstuff@optonline.net for a I00% i.d right now im at 90% one of the two by description it to me will be the red bellied. non of wich are poisonous. hope this was helpful let me know if you can send a pic and thanks for the question.
