Respiratory Therapist - Breathing concerns

Expert: Richard Manlove - 10/30/2009

Question
Good evening -
I am a happy, healthy, active, 32 year old married mother of two.  I have began to feel, recently, as though I need to take a deep breath, regular breaths aren't enough.  I find myself taking open mouthed breaths very regularly with some tightness in my chest.
I remember feeling this way before our wedding (stress) so I wonder if it's stress or if I should see someone.
Thank you very much for your time.  I do appreciate it.  Feeling as though you're not getting enough air is very alarming.

Answer
Dear Darla,
Indeed, the feeling of not getting enough breath is very alarming. However, it seems as if you have likely already diagnosed your breathing difficulty as stress related. I would recommend that you try to relax by telling yourself to take deep, controlled breaths, breathing in through your nose and breathing out through pursed (kissing) lips.
If this doesn't work you might want to consult a physician to rule out any organic causes. Good luck, stay healthy, active and look after your youngsters. Coping with the duties of motherhood, marriage and, perhaps, a career is, indeed, breathtaking. Take care.
Peace,
Richard
