Respiratory Therapist - Cold

Expert: Neal Okerson - 11/30/2004

Question
I have had a cold for about a week.  URI really, with a cough from post nasal drip.  Today when I coughed out the post nasal drip it was blood tinged as is the mucous I blow from my nose.  I suspect it is from just being irritated with all the blowing and coughing, the air is also very dry, I am running a vaporizer and using nose drops (saline).  Is this a normal path for a winter cold?  Thanks.

Answer
It sounds like a cold. Try to drink plenty of fluids. It may last another week. If the mucus gets consistently thick and yellow in color, then it may have progressed into a sinus infection. At that point, it would be time to phone your physician. Antibiotics may be required.  As long as the mucus stays pretty clear, just let the body fight it.

Neal
