Respiratory Therapist - Drinking alcohol while taking allergy vaccine

Expert: Neal Okerson - 4/7/2005

Question
Hi Neal,

I recently took a prick test to see what exactly I'm allergic too, and turns out I'm allergic to "mixed pollen" and animal hair. My doctor gave me a vaccine(Specific Desensitizing Vaccine MP.Goat.DH) to take every 3 days. She gave me 3 bottles(Dilutions: 1/10000, 1/1000, and 1/100). I'm supposed to take each dilution for a month.
She also told me to take this medicine once a day: Zyrtec Cetirizine 2HCL 10mg (GlaxoWellcome).

My question is: Is it safe for me to drink alcohol while taking this medicine and the vaccine? or should I wait till I have finished the 3-month treatment?

Thank you

Nora

Answer
Nora,
The only thing I can find is a precaution listed for Zyrtec about a "reduction in alertness". Zyrtec will cause some "reduction in alertness" or in other words - it will make you sleepy. Since alcohol is a depressant, it is not advisable to combine it with Zyrtec when performing activities that require mental alertness.

Of course you are not supposed to consume alcohol when perform these types of activities anyway.

Here is a link to the information:

You can read it and make an informed decision. I can't come up with any information about the vaccine. You will need to contact your physician about that one. A quick call to the office should answer your question.

Neal
