Respiratory Therapist - I have had athsma since I...

Expert: Neal Okerson - 2/26/2005

Question
I have had athsma since I was in the first grade( I'm now almost 17). In the fifth grade, I caught Croup and it lasted for two months. Recently I've spent some time researching it and have found out that it should only last about a week and that mine was an increadibly severe case. I looked on about 6-7 websites and could not find anything relating to athsma. I was wondering if the reason I had it for so long was because of my athsma, and also, why my Albuteral no longer works ever since I got croup.
Thanks for your time!

Answer
Gina,
Sorry for the slow response - had some computer problems.

More that likely the croup caused a flair up in your asthma. Often when people get colds or other sicknesses, it will make the airways more sensitive/hyperresponsive. I cannot give you a good answer about why the Albuterol is not working for you. I can only suggest that you see your physician about changing you medication. Sometimes adding another medication will make the original med more effective. So don't throw it away yet. I have a couple of web sites for you to check out:

You may have to register - but its doesn't require much time/information.

I hope that some of these may help.
