I am a 48 year-old singer who suffers from a chronic case of post nasal drip. My question is not regarding a diagnosis...I realize that is unrealistic, however, any comment you have on the following information I would consider helpful.
Over the years I have used my voice and in some cases abused the use. In recent years however, whenever I seem to get congestion in my throat and chest (2 - 3 times a year) I literally lose a great portion of my vocal ability. In your opionion, is this common?
I've begun to take Sudafed daily to try to keep the production of mucus build up in the throat and chest, however, the loss of voice (meaning I can speak, however, singing is VERY limited for sometimes months at a time) seems directly related.
Any suggestions for a specialist or any thoughts at all?
Thank you sincerely,
Reed
Answer Reed,
Sorry for the slow response!
Your best long-term solution will be to see an allergist. You can be tested to see what allergens are affecting you and an appropriate treatment choice can be made. I went through the process about a year ago and have had good success with injections. The whole process can be several hundred dollars, but since you are a singer - your livelihood depends on your results.
